Move as a household

For every household member, record passport, residence route, relationship evidence, insurance and intended activity. Partners might qualify together under one route or need independent applications. Ask about unmarried partners, adult children, older relatives and any dependency conditions which matter to your household.

A dependent route does not answer a partner’s employment question. Read the work conditions separately and confirm whether additional authorization is needed. If both adults need to earn, run the budget using only the income supported by confirmed permission until the second arrangement is resolved.

Contact the specific school or education authority. Ask about entry age, language, admissions timing, residence documents, catchment area, tuition, deposits, transport and support services. Request written confirmation of places and costs before treating a website listing as a confirmed school option.

Bring school reports and any relevant learning support records in the format the school accepts. Ask how a midyear start works and how the curriculum connects with a possible return to the United States. If considering home education or online school, check the destination’s education rules before relying on a US program.

The State Department advises checking destination rules for minors, evidence of family relationships and consent documents when a child travels with one parent or another adult. Entry and exit arrangements differ. Resolve any custody or consent issues with the appropriate professional before travel.

Discuss the move as a household before booking. Decide who handles administration, childcare and school communication, how each adult will build a local routine, and what would trigger a return. Schedule a household check in after the first month. Practical agreement is as important as a completed application.
