01Separate four coverage questions
Check the immigration minimum, emergency treatment, continuing routine care and medical evacuation separately. Ask about preexisting conditions, prescriptions, mental health, dental care, deductibles, waiting periods, activities and the full stay duration. Get the answers against the actual policy wording.
The State Department advises checking overseas medical coverage and notes some providers require payment or a deposit before treatment. Ask insurers whether they pay a hospital directly or reimburse you later. Keep enough accessible funds for the arrangement you choose. A cheap policy with a high out of pocket requirement needs a different cash reserve.
02Plan continuing treatment

Check destination and transit rules with the relevant authorities before packing. Ask your clinician for an appropriate record and continuity plan. Do not assume a medicine available in the United States is permitted, stocked or sold under the same name abroad.
Find a provider near the area where you intend to live. Ask about appointments, language, ongoing treatment, medical record transfer and prescription renewal. Record the nearest suitable hospital and insurer assistance number. Verify accessibility, transport and any specialist services your household needs before choosing housing.
03Check coverage for older travelers and families
Medicare generally provides limited coverage outside the United States, with specific exceptions described by Medicare. Review your exact Medicare, supplemental or private plan rather than assuming overseas care is included. Ask about coverage duration and age restrictions when comparing a separate policy.
If your move includes dependents, price and confirm each person’s protection. A family named on a visa application still needs the appropriate insurance evidence where required. Check whether a destination’s public system is available under the actual residence category and when coverage would begin. Plan for any interval before enrollment.
