01Name the money before counting it
Make a simple list of every source: salary, freelance work, business activity, pension, Social Security, rent, dividends, interest, royalties and cash savings. Add the payer’s country, currency, frequency and the work you do to receive it.
Remote earnings usually arise from active work. A pension or investment payment often appears under passive or independent-means planning, but visa categories and tax law use their own definitions. Savings are an asset; they do not necessarily meet a recurring-income requirement.
02Compare the same numbers

The authority might ask for several prior months, a full year, ongoing contracts or a minimum balance. Put the unit, currency and evidence period beside every figure.
Do not compare one country’s single-applicant figure with another’s family requirement. Ask whether a partner’s earnings count, whether the threshold rises per dependent and how irregular freelance receipts are assessed. Where official pages disagree, keep both figures visible and ask the deciding office to resolve the conflict.
03Mixed income needs a closer look
Imagine a person receiving a pension and doing a few consulting hours each week. A pension-supported residence route might prohibit the consulting, even if the pension alone meets its financial test. A remote-work route might require active-work evidence the pension cannot replace.
Owning a company and receiving dividends does not mean your management work is passive. Explain the actual work to the authority and your tax adviser. Moving the bank account or relabeling payments does not change the underlying activity.
04Keep an evidence folder, not sensitive uploads
Ask for the precise acceptable documents, then gather contracts, payslips, invoices, pension award letters or bank statements as applicable. Check names, dates, translations and certification before paying for paperwork.
Keep source documents in your own secure storage. Use the Meridian notebook for questions and next actions, not account numbers or document copies. A visa minimum and your household’s real living budget are separate calculations.
