Working remotely from Canada is not the same as moving there.
A closer look at visitor status, Canadian jobs and the steps toward permanent residence.

Canada feels close enough to try without turning your whole life upside down. For an American with an online job, proximity is a real planning advantage. But a visit and a permanent move need different paperwork.
Before comparing apartments, answer one question: do you want a temporary change of scene, a Canadian job or a lasting home? Your answer determines where to start.
A temporary stay with your existing job
IRCC explains that digital nomads working for employers outside Canada, without entering the Canadian labor market, use visitor status for stays of up to six months. This is not a separate digital nomad visa.
The published digital-nomad guidance does not set a fixed monthly salary threshold. Do not read the absence of a salary number as automatic permission. Entry conditions, your work arrangement and the period of stay granted still matter.
Prepare a plain explanation of your job, where your employer and clients are located, and how you will support your visit. Get your employer’s approval for working from Canada before booking a working stay.
Check your documents before heading north
IRCC’s entry guide has separate instructions for US citizens and US lawful permanent residents. Use the section matching your citizenship and method of travel. A valid passport is the straightforward starting point for a US citizen.
Keep your intended departure date and accommodation details together. Ask about an extension before your authorized stay expires if your plans change. Repeated border crossings are not a permanent residence strategy.
If you want to settle, start a new application plan
Express Entry manages three skilled-worker immigration programs. Eligible applicants enter a pool, receive a score and wait for an invitation before submitting a permanent residence application. A good salary alone does not establish eligibility.
Read the program requirements before paying for tests or credential assessments. List your work history, qualifications, language evidence and family circumstances. Then check the documents required for your particular program.
IRCC provides separate fee and processing tools. Use the program and household details matching your application. There is no single Canada-wide price or timeline covering a visitor, a work permit and permanent residence.
A Canadian job changes the conversation
IRCC notes that digital nomads who find Canadian employers are able to apply for work permits. Applying is a separate step. Ask the employer which permit route applies, who prepares the paperwork and when you are authorized to start.
If you are retiring, do not treat the remote-work visitor explanation as a retirement residence program. Review the immigration categories applicable to your own circumstances, including any family connection, before planning a permanent move.
Settle taxes and healthcare before settling in
Canada’s Revenue Agency looks at residential ties and the circumstances of your stay. A home, spouse or dependants in Canada are significant factors. Counting days alone does not resolve every tax-residency question.
US citizens remain subject to US tax rules on worldwide income. Ask an adviser familiar with both countries how your salary, retirement accounts and investment income would be treated.
Public healthcare eligibility is administered by provinces and territories. Confirm coverage and its start date for your status. Arrange insurance for any period without coverage, and check prescriptions and ongoing care separately.
