An ordinary week in Thailand, city, north or coast.
Three places to test, heat and air quality, and what to check before you sign a lease.

Thailand looks easy from a beach hotel. A normal week asks about clinics, heat, rain and paperwork.
Try two places with the same errands. A capital week and a northern week feel very different.
Three places to put on your research list
These places offer different settings. They are planning prompts, not rankings of safety or cost.
Bangkok
The capital and largest city, and the country’s business and cultural center.
During your visit. Compare two neighborhoods for noise and the walk to a train station. Time the trip to a hospital.
Chiang Mai
A northern city with an old town moat, centuries-old temples and street markets.
During your visit. Visit in the season you would live there and ask about air quality. Find a clinic near your address.
Hua Hin
One of the country’s oldest beach resort towns.
During your visit. Ask which clinics and shops run all year. Time the trip to Bangkok for appointments.
A normal week asks about clinics, heat, rain and paperwork.
Build your visit around a normal week
Rent where you would live. Shop for groceries, take the transport you would depend on and test home internet at the address.
If you work, keep your real hours for three days. Note how the time difference with US teams feels by day four.
Healthcare and housing, in person
Bring international health cover. Visit a clinic near each address. Ask about English, fees and how your insurer pays.
Get the full rent in writing, with deposit, power, water and any fees. Ask how the deposit is returned. Verify the owner before you send money.
Solo women and safety
The US State Department rates Thailand Level 1, exercise normal precautions. It advises increased caution near the Cambodian border and in the Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces.
We have not found evidence to give Thailand a separate safety rating for women. Ask women living in your chosen neighborhood about walking at night, taxis and home security.
Meeting people
Pick one recurring activity before you arrive: a Thai class, a walking group or a volunteer shift. Showing up each week builds friendships faster than events for newcomers only.
Talk with Thais as well as people who moved from abroad. Ask what they would check twice before choosing the same city. Then share what you learn in the Thailand chat room.
