Portugal D8 or D7? Start with where your money comes from.
Remote-work income, pensions and savings are not interchangeable. Choose the route before collecting the paperwork.

Portugal belongs in a conversation about working from somewhere new. It has a specific route for qualifying work performed remotely for employers or clients outside Portugal.
It also has a separate residence-visa category for retirees and people living on their own income. You will often see these described as D8 and D7. The names are useful shorthand, but the evidence behind your income matters more.
U.S. dollar conversions are estimates using rates dated Sep 15, 2026. The amount and currency required by the visa office still apply. Rates by Exchange Rate API.
Put your income into the right category
For the remote-work route, the Portuguese Foreign Ministry asks for evidence of employment or services provided to entities outside Portugal. It also asks for evidence of average monthly income over the previous three months and tax residence.
For the retirement or own-income category, the supporting documents concern the relevant pension or qualifying income. Savings, rental receipts, dividends and salary are different kinds of evidence. Do not relabel a paycheck as passive income because a lower figure appears in another visa category.
If your income is mixed, bring a clear breakdown to the consulate or your qualified adviser. Ask which route matches the income you expect to keep receiving after the move.
Read the remote-work income calculation correctly
The official rule uses four times the minimum monthly remuneration. The Portuguese government set the 2026 minimum wage at 920 euros (EUR), about US$1,063. Multiplying by four gives 3,680 euros (EUR), about US$4,251 per month for the comparison used here.
This is a calculation from two government sources, not a separate published dollar threshold. The US-dollar display is an exchange-rate estimate. Your application is assessed using the official currency and evidence rules.
Look at the required income period, not only your best month. Ask how fluctuating freelance receipts, taxes and household members affect your evidence. Meeting the financial requirement alone does not establish approval.
Build a document plan before booking the move
Start with the current residence-visa checklist and the instructions of the office handling your application. Keep employment or service contracts, income records and tax-residence evidence together. Check the requirements for insurance, accommodation and criminal-record documents.
For each document, record who issues it, whether translation or authentication is required, and how recent it must be. Arrange a realistic sequence so a document does not become too old while you wait for another appointment.
Ask for the current government and service charges in writing. Keep the visa application, service-center charges and later residence-permit costs separate. The application budget should also leave room for travel and temporary housing.
The visa and the residence card are different stages
AIMA describes the remote-work residence permit as initially valid for two years, with renewal for successive three-year periods. The residence visa used to enter Portugal is a separate step.
Check the arrival and appointment instructions issued with your visa. Keep proof of your application and permission accessible. Do not assume the visa application alone completes residence registration.
Ask about travel during the process before booking trips outside Portugal. Appointment availability and the actual document issued affect planning. A future renewal also depends on meeting the applicable conditions.
D8 does not mean tax-free income
Portugal’s tax authority explains that residence arises from more than 183 days in the relevant twelve-month period or, in some circumstances, a home showing an intention to live there habitually. A shorter stay does not always settle the issue.
The visa label does not grant a blanket tax exemption. Ask about employment, self-employment, pensions and investments individually. For US citizens, continuing US filing obligations also belong in the plan.
Before choosing a move date, have someone familiar with both systems review your situation. Keep the answer specific to your household and income sources instead of relying on an old article about a tax incentive.
