Five places to put on your research list
These towns offer different settings. They are planning prompts, not rankings of safety or cost.
Galway
A west coast city with medieval stone walls and street performers.
During your visit. Compare rents in two neighborhoods. Walk the route to groceries and a GP in the rain.
Cork
A city on the River Lee, with Kinsale and a harbor trip to Cobh within reach without a car.
During your visit. Test the hills with shopping bags. Ask how long a GP takes to book a new patient.
Kilkenny
A city with a castle, medieval streets and boat rides on the River Nore.
During your visit. Price the trip to Dublin Airport. Check evening transport if you do not plan to drive.
Westport
A Mayo town on Clew Bay, at the start of the Great Western Greenway for walking and cycling.
During your visit. Find the nearest hospital and pharmacy hours. Ask how winter changes the town.
Limerick
A city on the River Shannon, home to King John’s Castle.
During your visit. Time the drive or bus to Shannon. Compare two neighborhoods after dark.
Spend part of your visit on a wet Tuesday, with groceries to carry and a bus to catch.
Build your visit around a normal week
Rent near where you would live. Do the weekly shop. Take the bus you would depend on. Test home internet at the address, not the café down the street.
If you work, keep your real hours for three days. Irish mornings overlap with the US East Coast afternoon, so late calls are common. Note how that feels by day four.
Healthcare and housing, in person
Stamp 0 requires private medical insurance with full cover in private hospitals. Ask a local GP practice whether it takes new patients, what a visit costs and how fast you would be seen.
Get the full rent in writing, with deposit, heating and any fees. Ask about damp, insulation and the notice needed to end a lease. Verify the landlord before you send money.
Flights home
Dublin and Shannon airports have US Customs and Border Protection preclearance. You clear US immigration and customs before boarding, then land in the United States as a domestic arrival.
Leave extra time at the airport for preclearance. Choose a town with a practical route to one of these airports if you plan to fly home often.

Solo women and safety
Read the current US travel advisory for Ireland before you book. We have not found evidence to give Ireland a separate safety rating for women. Ask women living in your chosen town about walking home, taxis and late buses.
Keep your address and arrival plan with someone you trust. Arrange your first ride from the airport in advance.
Meeting people
Book a recurring activity before you arrive: a walking group, a choir, a library event or a class. Repeat visits turn strangers into neighbors faster than one big night out.
Speak with Irish residents and with people who moved from abroad. Ask what surprised them in their first winter. Then share what you learn in the Ireland chat room.
