Australia is a bigger move. Solve the visa question first.

Do not build a working move around visitor permission

Home Affairs describes the Visitor visa as a route for visits and states that work in Australia is not permitted. Do not assume payment into an American account resolves every work-permission question.

If overseas remote work is part of your proposed visit, explain the full arrangement to Home Affairs or a registered migration adviser. Get a clear answer for the activities and visa conditions involved before committing to a working stay.

For a scouting holiday, give yourself time away from work if needed. A trip to inspect neighborhoods is useful even when it is not permission to move permanently.

An employer-sponsored role is a concrete starting point

The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, allows an employer to sponsor a suitably skilled worker. The Core Skills stream generally permits work for the sponsor for up to four years, subject to the grant and conditions.

Ask whether the employer is willing and able to sponsor your specific role. Then review the occupation, skills, experience and pay requirements for the relevant stream. A job advertisement saying “remote” does not answer the sponsorship question.

Ask who covers the relocation costs, what happens if the job ends and whether any later permanent route is realistic. Keep promises about immigration separate from promises about employment.

Skilled migration involves selection

The Skilled Independent visa, subclass 189, is a permanent route for invited workers meeting its conditions. SkillSelect is the system used to express interest in eligible skilled visas.

Home Affairs identifies 65 points as the minimum threshold for the relevant points-tested streams. Meeting a minimum does not guarantee an invitation. Occupation requirements, skills assessment, English and other eligibility conditions still matter.

Complete the official eligibility checks before paying someone to prepare an expression of interest. Ask an adviser to identify the exact subclass and explain every assumption in the proposed route.

Get a quote for the actual household and subclass

Use the official visa page and its current pricing and processing tools. Costs differ by subclass, stream and the people included. Processing estimates change with the application category and the cases being decided.

No single fee or decision time covers “moving to Australia.” Keep separate lines for government charges, professional advice, medical examinations, documents, travel and temporary housing. Do not treat a missing total here as a free application.

If retirement is the goal, start with a route assessment for your own circumstances. A pension or investment balance alone is not the skilled-employment evidence described in this article.

Confirm health coverage for your status

Services Australia sets out who is eligible to enroll in Medicare. Eligibility is linked to citizenship, residence and other qualifying circumstances. Having a US health plan or arriving with a visa does not by itself establish Australian Medicare coverage.

Ask about the precise coverage available to your household, including prescriptions, dental care and ongoing treatment. Arrange suitable insurance for any gap. Have this answer before ending an existing policy.

Add a distance budget to the money budget

Price an urgent flight home as well as the first flight out. Work through who would care for a relative or pet during an unexpected trip. Test meeting times across both countries’ clock changes.

Bring your proposed work arrangement to a tax adviser in Australia and an adviser familiar with US filing obligations. US citizens remain subject to US rules on worldwide income. Immigration permission and tax treatment are separate decisions.

The right route should support an ordinary week of your life, including work, family calls, errands and rest. A realistic plan leaves space for all four.
